In 1954 Leoncio and Ceferino Fernandez set up together Canteras Fernandez, a company devoted to slate extraction and roofing. The first quarry named "Cabanas" was followed by "Ardemouro" ,  "A Carmina" , "Rodzadais" , "Valdemiguel" and " A Fraguina " , located in the Valdeorras valley in Ourense  Spain .

In 2004 CAFERSA founded a company called LOUSAVAL as its own sales and marketing company , to supply  the European market with 50,000 tons of slate per year Consolidating Canteras Fernandez S.A as the biggest slate producing company world wide .
